Citizenship

Citizenship is a compulsory subject introduced by the Government in 2003. At Lyndon we have chosen to deliver this as one of our Specialist College Humanities subjects.

We have also introduced Citizenship as a half GCSE course for all students, this is teamed with a half GCSE in Religious Studies, another compulsory and complimentary subject, to give a full GCSE course. Citizenship is also a major contributor to the Every Child Matters agenda.

Citizenship has a body of knowledge but it also encourages students to ask why they think and believe the things they do, to develop their own ideas and opinions based on real and rational consideration.

In Citizenship, students will look at:

  • Rights and Responsibilities,
  • Community
  • Government
  • The media
  • Sustainable Development
  • Crime and the Law.

Each of these ideas is considered on an increasingly wider scale, starting with the school, moving out into the local community, then to national level and finally to a global level.

Citizenship also encourages students to become active in the school and local community. Each year our theme days invite members of the local community into school to share their experiences with our students.
